3 Reasons Why Your Grass Isn't Healthy

Some homeowners can be frustrated when their grass looks unhealthy, but they might not know what causes the problem or how to make it better. There are a lot of reasons for poor grass health, and many of the fixes are fairly simple. Learn more about why your lawn could be struggling and what you can do about it.

Improper Mowing

Did you know that if you are not mowing correctly, your grass will start looking more unhealthy? Sometimes, people mow their grass too short, which makes it hard for the grass to recover after being cut. Cutting grass too short can also make it easier for weeds to overtake the lawn because the shade from taller grass makes it hard for sprouting weed seeds to get the sun they need.

Another common mistake is mowing too frequently. Grass needs time between mowing to recover. You might try hiring a lawn mowing service for your lawn. They have the right equipment (including mowers with sharpened blades that will slice the grass instead of tearing it) and the right knowledge for how to get your lawn back on track with correct mowing practices.

Insufficient Water

Grass needs a lot of water to stay green and lush, especially during hot summer months. If you get a lot of rain, you might not worry much about watering your grass. But during dry weeks or months, if you care about your grass staying green, you'll need some sort of irrigation.

It's better to water grass in the early morning or at night after the sun has started to go down. This way, the water has time to penetrate down the root system instead of running off or evaporating in the heat. Give the grass a long drink every 3-4 days, instead of watering for short periods each day. The long drink and subsequent break encourage deeper root growth, which will make your grass more drought resistant over time.

Traffic

Grass can tolerate a little traffic, but grass that is always walked on will not thrive as well as grass that is allowed to grow without being disturbed. If you have areas of your lawn that get heavier traffic, you might consider replacing these areas with a patio or walkway. For example, if the grass around your fire pit is worn and patchy, you might lay down some weed barrier fabric and fill that area with pea gravel instead.

If you notice your grass is dying, contact a lawn care service or lawn mowing company near you.

About Me
Planning Your Landscape

After thinking about what I wanted my yard to be like, I realized that there were a few issues I needed to work out. For starters, I really wanted to pave the way for larger outdoor gatherings, so I started talking with family members and friends about ideas they had. I was able to find a great landscaper who offered the types of things that I was looking for, and so they came out to help. After talking about creating a patio area and a flower garden, we started getting things done. Now my yard is lush and beautiful, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
