Congratulations! You have now acquired a new home. This can be one of your biggest achievements in your life. However, it can also cause you a lot of stress, especially if you have bought a resale or newly constructed home. Most of these homes come with tons of responsibilities, especially in lawn maintenance. Therefore, you need to know the right tools and products, as well as the right landscaping professional to assist you in maintaining your lawn. But, before all this, you need to know the following lawn maintenance tips if you are a new homeowner.

Inspect Your Grass

It is important to examine the grass you want to plant to determine whether it is suitable for your area. Areas in the south are more suitable for Bermuda or zoysia grass types while northern climates are suitable for Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass.

Plant Your Grass Carefully

You need to aerate your lawn's soil before you begin to plant new grass. Aerating the soil helps in increasing oxygen, nutrient, as well as water movement. After aerating the soil, you can start to spread the grass seed evenly. Then, add another soil layer to cover the seed—but ensure that the layer is light. Sprinkle water into the lawn until the soil becomes moist—avoid overwatering the soil. Excess water can easily drown the grass seed.

Make Sure You Buy the Right Type of Lawn Mower

A lawn mower is an effective tool for lawn maintenance. Walk-behind or push lawn mowers are the best options for homeowners with small lawns. Corded options, on the other hand, tend to be a bit cheaper; however, they are suitable for lawns that don't have fences or shrubs. Riding lawn mowers are best for large and medium yards. Garden and lawn tractors are good for homeowners with mixed terrain.

Observe the Right Mowing Practices

When moving your grass, you should never cut over one-third of the blade of your grass. But, if you haven't mowed your lawn in a while, and the grass is out of control, you need to set the cutting height of the mower to the top possible setting. However, you need to reset the cutting height to normal after you are through with the job. Now, you need to mow your lawn again within a few days.

Consider Installing Lawn Edgings

Lawn edgings can help in keeping your yard clean and neat. You can use brick, concrete, wood, or different type of plastic materials available. Lawn edgings help grass not to grow into an undesired area. In addition, the edgings ensure that ground covers don't find their way into the lawn.

About Me
Planning Your Landscape

After thinking about what I wanted my yard to be like, I realized that there were a few issues I needed to work out. For starters, I really wanted to pave the way for larger outdoor gatherings, so I started talking with family members and friends about ideas they had. I was able to find a great landscaper who offered the types of things that I was looking for, and so they came out to help. After talking about creating a patio area and a flower garden, we started getting things done. Now my yard is lush and beautiful, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
